Description
Gan Takada, often called Gan-chan for short, is the 13-year-old protagonist who operates under the heroic alias Yatterman-1. He is the son of a toymaker and possesses an extraordinary natural gift for mechanics and invention. This talent is showcased when he takes his father's unfinished, dog-shaped rescue robot and perfects it, creating the powerful mecha known as Yatter-Wan, which becomes his primary partner in battle. His everyday appearance consists of a blue jumpsuit and a matching cap, but when he transforms into Yatterman-1, he turns this outfit inside out to reveal a white suit, adds a black hat, red gloves, and a red mask with long ribbons trailing from the back.

In his role as the leader of the Yatterman team, Gan fights alongside his girlfriend Ai Kaminari, who is known as Yatterman-2. Together, they are dedicated to stopping the misdeeds of the Doronbo Gang, a trio of comical villains sent on a quest to gather the fragments of the Skull Stone. His defining weapon is a modified version of a traditional Japanese kendama toy, which he calls the Kenda-Magic. This tool is remarkably versatile, serving as a flail, a grappling hook, and even an electrified weapon capable of delivering powerful shocks to his enemies. Over the course of his adventures, he also invents other gadgets, such as the Karu Koma spinning top and the Shuru Shuru Cutter beam weapon, to help in various situations.

The core of Gan's personality is a powerful and unwavering sense of justice, which drives him to confront evil whenever it appears. Especially in the original 1977 series, this dedication can be quite rigid, and he typically shows little sympathy for the villains he defeats. However, there is a noticeable difference in his character between the original series and the 2008 remake. In the newer version, Gan is initially depicted as being more carefree, lazy, and sometimes needing to be urged into action by the more focused Ai. Despite this slower start, his heroic nature prevails, and he grows out of this behavior as the story progresses, maturing into the proactive and responsible leader he is known to be.

His key relationships are central to the story. His partnership with Ai is a close bond between childhood friends and fellow heroes, which eventually develops into a romantic relationship, and in later installments like Time Bokan: Royal Revival, they are shown to be happily married. Additionally, he shares a strong bond with his mechanical creations, particularly Yatter-Wan, which he operates from the cockpit and upgrades into more powerful forms such as the Yatter-King after the original is destroyed.

Later stories explore the legacy of his heroism. In the series Yatterman Night, it is established that Gan and Ai were eventually killed by their nemesis, Dokurobei, during his final revenge. Following this event, Dokurobei takes over the Earth and creates a dystopian kingdom, using robot clones that resemble Gan to oppress the population and tarnish the Yatterman name. Generations later, a descendant of the Doronbo Gang named Galina is inspired by Gan's example and takes on his role as the new Yatterman-1 to avenge him and restore justice.
