Description
Mudflap is an Autobot from the film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. He and his twin brother Skids were created when a single Cybertronian spark split into two separate sparks, forming an exceptionally close bond between them. Mudflap and Skids traveled to Earth together with the dream of serving under Optimus Prime and becoming full-fledged warriors in the Autobot cause.
Mudflap's personality is defined by hyperactivity, noisiness, and a constant eagerness to prove himself. He is argumentative and often bickers with his brother over trivial matters, but despite this friction, he recognizes that the two function best as a team. Mudflap is desperate to impress his fellow Autobots, and this eagerness sometimes makes him appear reckless or unfocused, comparable to the robot equivalent of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He and Skids enjoy engaging in daredevil antics and frequently try to outdo one another, yet their squabbling can also cause unintended consequences, such as damaging structures or nearly endangering human allies.
Mudflap's primary motivation is to gain approval and demonstrate his worth as a warrior under Optimus Prime's command. He is driven by a desire to be seen as tough and capable, though his bravado often slips to reveal a more immature and insecure nature. He is loyal to the Autobot cause and willing to put himself in danger to protect others, even if his methods are chaotic.
In the story, Mudflap first appears during a NEST mission in Shanghai, where he and Skids deploy in their original Earth alternate mode, a beat-up ice cream truck. Their slow and awkward vehicle form hinders their ability to pursue the Decepticon Sideways, leading to a failure that forces them to acquire new individual alternate forms. Mudflap later scans a Chevrolet Trax. The twins are later dispatched to locate Sam Witwicky when Decepticon activity threatens his college. After Optimus Prime is killed, Mudflap helps fight off Megatron and Starscream to allow Sam and his friends to escape. During the group's search for the Matrix of Leadership, Mudflap questions why they should help Sam, but the twins inadvertently cause a hole to open in a wall that reveals the tomb containing the Matrix. In the final battle in Egypt, Mudflap acts as a decoy alongside his brother and human allies, attracting the attention of the Constructicons. He is sucked into Devastator's mouth, survives by blasting his way out, and later reunites with Skids during the fight, though he accidentally shoots his brother in the chaos.
The most significant relationship in Mudflap's life is with his twin Skids. The two are inseparable and share a unique bond, but their dynamic is marked by constant competition and bickering. Mudflap becomes irritated by Skids's tendency to one-up him verbally, yet he understands that they rely on each other to succeed. Their fighting style and problem-solving are deeply interdependent. Mudflap also interacts with other Autobots such as Bumblebee, who physically disciplines the twins when their arguing becomes too disruptive, and with human characters like Sam Witwicky and Leo Spitz, whom he teases and occasionally helps. Mudflap's development is subtle; he begins as a clumsy, attention-seeking newcomer and, through the course of the mission, proves his willingness to face danger and contribute to the Autobot effort, even if his methods remain unrefined.
Mudflap's notable abilities include hyper-reactive optical imaging scanners, which allow him to process tactical information faster than most other Transformers, a trait he shares with his brother. He can transform into a Chevrolet Trax compact car, and he and Skids retain the ability to combine into a single, more durable vehicle form, though this is not used extensively in the film. Mudflap is also capable of independent combat and shows resourcefulness, such as escaping from inside Devastator by shooting a hole through the giant combiner's head. He possesses a weapon that extends from his arm, and he is agile enough to swing from cables and fight while in motion.
