Live action TV
Description
Hirokazu Ukita is a member of the Japanese police task force assembled to investigate the Kira case. Physically, he is a short young man of 26 years with a small frame, standing 161 cm tall and weighing 51 kg, with short black hair and small, dark eyes. He is almost always seen wearing a standard suit and tie, and is rarely without a cigarette, being a heavy smoker. His birthday is November 9, and his blood type is A.

In terms of personality, Ukita is defined by his impatience, boldness, and quick temper. He dislikes waiting and struggles with elaborate, long-term planning, preferring instead to act on his emotions and instincts. This makes him a frontline action-oriented detective who shines in tense, high-risk situations due to his courage and drive. He is extremely dedicated to his work and is not afraid to put himself in danger, but his impulsive nature is his most defining trait, for better or worse. He also shares with his colleague Shuichi Aizawa a degree of distrust and unease regarding L’s secretive methods and unorthodox style, even though they are cooperating with the world's greatest detective.

Ukita’s primary motivation is a strong sense of justice and a commitment to his duty as a police officer. He is fully devoted to capturing Kira and stopping the serial killings, a commitment he maintains until his death. His role in the story is that of a supporting member of the task force, one of the younger detectives alongside Touta Matsuda. He serves as a representation of the dedicated, everyman police officer whose work is cut short by the supernatural threat they are facing. His most significant action is rushing to the Sakura TV building on April 18 to stop a controversial broadcast that is connected to the second Kira. Acting on impulse without waiting for the rest of the team, he attempts to force his way into the building to shut down the program. At that moment, he is seen by Misa Amane, the second Kira, who possesses the Shinigami Eyes. She writes his name in her Death Note, and he dies of a heart attack in front of the building. As he is dying, he tries to press an emergency alert button on a belt given to him by Watari to warn his colleagues, but he is unable to do so in time. He is the only member of the main Japanese task force to be killed in the line of duty during the investigation.

Key relationships include his bond with fellow detective Shuichi Aizawa. The two are close colleagues and friends, sharing suspicions about L and working together on the front lines. Aizawa is deeply affected by Ukita’s death, and later mentions that he could not face Ukita if he were to quit the investigation. Ukita’s loyalty is to the task force leader, Soichiro Yagami, and his teammates, a commitment that ultimately leads to his demise. He also has a relationship with the task force’s technical support, Watari, who provides him with the emergency alert belt.

Ukita does not undergo significant character development, as his death occurs relatively early in the story. However, his sacrifice serves as a major development point for the remaining characters. His death provides the task force with critical information, confirming the existence of a second Kira who can kill simply by seeing a person's face. It also steels the resolve of the remaining members, particularly Aizawa, and serves as a tragic reminder of the very real, lethal stakes of their investigation. In terms of notable abilities, Ukita is not a master strategist like L or Light Yagami. His strengths lie in his high level of physical courage, his quick reactions in dangerous situations, and his tenacity. He is a frontline detective willing to take immediate action, which, while often reckless, demonstrates his unwavering bravery and dedication to justice. The official statistics for the character rate his action power as 7 out of 10 and his sense of justice as 8 out of 10, highlighting these traits. In the live-action film adaptations, Ukita’s role is altered; he appears as an older, more experienced detective and, unlike in the original manga and anime, he survives the Sakura TV incident, with the character Kanzo Mogi dying in his place.
