Description
The following is a comprehensive description of Karen Davis based on her appearance in the live-action films The Grudge and The Grudge 2.

Karen Davis is an American exchange student and social welfare worker living in Tokyo, Japan. Originally from Pasadena, California, she moved to Japan with her boyfriend, Doug. Her family includes her mother, Mrs. Davis, and her younger sister, Aubrey. It is suggested that Karen received more attention from their mother growing up, which created a sense of jealousy and resentment in Aubrey.

In the first film, Karen’s compassionate and diligent nature leads her to accept a caretaking assignment for an elderly woman named Emma Williams, who lives in a house in Tokyo. This house was previously the home of the Saeki family, where a violent murder occurred, giving rise to a powerful and deadly curse known as the grudge. Upon entering the house, Karen immediately senses something is wrong and encounters the ghosts of the murdered family, including the woman Kayako and her young son Toshio. Her primary motivation becomes survival and protecting those she cares about, particularly after the curse follows her home and kills her boyfriend, Doug. Desperate to stop the curse, she sets the Saeki house on fire, an act she hopes will destroy it. While she survives the fire, she learns that the curse cannot be destroyed and continues to haunt her.

By the time of The Grudge 2, Karen is hospitalized, deeply traumatized, paranoid, and frantic to stop Kayako from claiming her. Her psychological state has deteriorated significantly from the capable caretaker she once was, as the nonstop haunting has worn down her resolve. Her sister, Aubrey, arrives in Tokyo after being sent by their mother to bring her home. Karen is initially agitated by Aubrey's presence and pleads to be released from the hospital, believing she is the only one who can stop the curse. The key relationship in this film is the strained bond between Karen and Aubrey, with Karen’s overbearing behavior and the supernatural horror she brings into their lives pushing them into a desperate situation.

Karen’s story concludes in The Grudge 2 when Kayako’s ghost confronts her in the hospital. In a final attempt to escape, Karen flees to the roof of the building, where Kayako ultimately causes her to fall to her death, with Aubrey witnessing the event. While Karen has no supernatural abilities, her encounter with the curse grants her a form of sensitivity, as she is able to sense the evil of the Saeki house immediately upon entering, which other characters do not.
