Bem is the central figure and de facto leader of a trio of beings known as youkai-ningen, or humanoid monsters. His origins are obscure, with accounts describing his emergence from a single multiplying cell in a dark, silent place, indicating he was not born but rather came into existence through unknown means centuries ago. Despite his immortality, he consistently maintains the physical appearance of a man in his late twenties or thirties.
In his human guise, Bem presents himself as a cultured and gentlemanly figure, often dressed in a bowler hat and dark coat, and he carries a cane which doubles as a weapon in combat. His demeanor is typically calm, quiet, and collected, which can sometimes be mistaken for being cold-hearted or expressionless.
