Description
Bem is the central figure and de facto leader of a trio of beings known as youkai-ningen, or humanoid monsters. His origins are obscure, with accounts describing his emergence from a single multiplying cell in a dark, silent place, indicating he was not born but rather came into existence through unknown means centuries ago. Despite his immortality, he consistently maintains the physical appearance of a man in his late twenties or thirties.

In his human guise, Bem presents himself as a cultured and gentlemanly figure, often dressed in a bowler hat and dark coat, and he carries a cane which doubles as a weapon in combat. His demeanor is typically calm, quiet, and collected, which can sometimes be mistaken for being cold-hearted or expressionless. However, this exterior masks a profound sense of justice and a deeply caring nature, particularly towards his fellow monsters, Bela and Belo, whom he treats as his family. He acts as a father figure to them, using his intellectual and perceptive abilities to guide the group, often tempering Bela's emotional outbursts and unifying the trio under his leadership.

Bem's primary motivation is the ardent desire to become human. He holds an unwavering belief that by dedicating his existence to protecting humanity from evil and supernatural threats, he can one day earn his own humanity. This mission defines his role in the story, as he and his companions appear in cities to battle monstrous foes and criminals, all while hiding their true identities from the humans they save, who often fear and reject them due to their hideous true forms. His leadership is crucial, as he precisely assesses dangerous situations and always prioritizes the safety of human beings, even in the face of constant discrimination.

Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Bela and Belo is that of a protective patriarch, holding the family unit together. In the 2019 adaptation and the subsequent film Become Human, his relationship with the human detective Sonia Summers becomes pivotal. When the antagonist Manstroll fatally wounds Sonia, it triggers a profound response in Bem, who unleashes a powerful final monstrous form to destroy his foe. This event leads to his most significant development: a heroic sacrifice. Bem gives up his own lifeforce to revive Sonia, an act that fulfills his lifelong wish. By giving his life to save a human, he finally achieves a form of humanity, with his spirit continuing on within her body.

Bem possesses a range of notable abilities. His primary power is the transformation from his human-like state into a more menacing monster form. In this true form, he exhibits superhuman agility, heightened senses, and the capacity for teleportation and creating illusions. One of his signature powers is electrokinesis, the ability to summon and control electricity at will, which he uses as his primary elemental attack. In the 1968 series, he could also manipulate energy. While in his human form, he is a skilled fighter, utilizing his cane with a swordsman-like proficiency. When pushed to his limits by the death of an ally, he has demonstrated the ability to undergo a secondary, more powerful mutation.
