Description
Deckman is not a single character in the Alita: Battle Angel universe but rather a designation for a specific type of cyborg that serves the Factory, the governing body of the Scrapyard. These beings are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Factory's operations, including managing hunter-warrior bounties, operating the Factory Railroad, and enforcing Factory Law. A Deckman has a cylindrical body and retains a human brain that has been reconditioned to remove will, desire, and emotion, ensuring unquestioning loyalty to the Factory. They are typically known and referred to by their assigned numbers, such as Deckman 10 or Deckman 100.

The original series and its related stories present several Deckmen with varying degrees of deviation from their standard programming. Deckman 50, featured in the side story Homecoming, presents a notable exception to the typical emotionless model. After being damaged in an attack, this Deckman disregards its mission to seek water for a dying man. It wanders into the badlands, where it encounters children who play around it. During this encounter, it experiences and observes beauty for what is implied to be the first time, such as a sunset and a seashell given to it by a little girl. This journey ultimately ends with Deckman 50 being terminated by Alita, who had been ordered to destroy it for its deviation. This story highlights that even reconditioned brains can exhibit emergent and unpredictable behavior under the right circumstances.

In the sequel series Last Order, Deckman 100 becomes a major supporting character. He is a Deckman who has been captured and reprogrammed by the eccentric scientist Desty Nova to be a devoted servant and mechanic for Alita. Unlike his predecessors, Deckman 100 has a pronounced personality, marked by his unhesitating and almost comical loyalty to Alita, whom he always addresses as "Master." He has a distinct speech pattern, replacing the R and L sounds in his words with Ws. His primary motivation is to serve and protect Alita, a directive he follows to the point of preparing a noose when she initially accuses him of being a spy.

Deckman 100's role in the story is chiefly that of a support and repair specialist. He is equipped with a secondary, mobile body that allows him to operate in space, a necessity for the series' setting on the space city of Ketheres. His notable ability is his expertise in advanced cyborg repair. He is modified by Nova to maintain Alita's powerful Imaginos Body, and he can also work on other complex TUNED cyborgs. He plays a key operational role, such as helping to repair Alita after severe battles and even launching her remains to her ally Sechs using a missile launcher during a crucial fight. He is a constant companion to Alita and her team, the Space Angels, and has a cordial relationship with the other members, even if Alita herself becomes less reliant on him after her body gains self-regenerative abilities. This character represents the most developed version of a Deckman, evolving from an anonymous, emotionless functionary into a loyal, quirky, and expressive individual through Nova's reprogramming. His existence in the live-action Alita: Battle Angel film was also confirmed by director Robert Rodriguez as a detail taken directly from the original manga.
