Description
Max Rourke is the editor of the Daily Astorian, the local newspaper in Astoria, Oregon, where Rachel Keller finds work after moving from Seattle. In his professional capacity, he is observant and pragmatic, noticing that Rachel keeps her office door closed and remarking that it betrays her background at a larger newspaper. He is initially skeptical of the supernatural events that surround Rachel and her son Aidan, but he is also supportive and willing to help when Rachel’s situation becomes dire. When Aidan develops strange symptoms and Rachel appears to be in crisis, Max takes them into his home, showing a protective instinct. In the unrated version of the film, his concern for Rachel is paired with a clear romantic interest, hinting that his motivations extend beyond simple collegiality. As Aidan’s possession by Samara progresses, Max becomes suspicious. He attempts to secretly photograph the boy, aware that supernatural entities can appear differently on film. This attempt ultimately leads to his death at the hands of the possessed Aidan, marking him as one of the casualties of the curse. Max Rourke does not possess any supernatural abilities; his role is that of a well-meaning, ordinary person who becomes entangled in a horror beyond his understanding. His key relationship is with Rachel, whom he employs and tries to aid, and his development moves from detached professionalism to active involvement and ultimately to victimhood. He represents the supportive but ultimately powerless ally in the face of an unstoppable supernatural force.
