Description
Suzuki Satoru, a salaryman in 22nd-century Japan's environmentally ruined, corporate-strangled future, found escape only in the DMMORPG YGGDRASIL. There, he played Momonga, the undead magic caster and guildmaster of the heteromorphic guild Ainz Ooal Gown. Their guild base, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, contained NPCs meticulously crafted by his guildmates, endowed with rich backstories and personalities.
On YGGDRASIL's final day, Momonga lingered alone. At server shutdown, he was physically transported into the game world as his avatar, with Nazarick and its NPCs materializing in a new reality called the New World. The NPCs gained true sentience, venerating Momonga—now Ainz Ooal Gown—as the supreme ruler among the guild's "Forty-One Supreme Beings."
Ainz manifests as a skeletal Overlord, fleshless, with dark red lights in his eye sockets and a crimson orb hovering beneath his ribcage. He typically wears ornate black and gold robes, changing attire for occasions like the white-and-gold vestments used in the Holy Kingdom. His alternate identity, the adamantite-ranked adventurer "Momon," uses full black armor, a red cape, and dual swords to mask his undead nature.
Transformation into undeath suppressed most of Ainz's human emotions, fostering a detached, calculating persona. Yet echoes of his humanity endure: profound loyalty binds him to Nazarick's NPCs, whom he sees as the surrogate children of his vanished guildmates. He harbors intense guilt for altering Albedo the Overseer Guardian's settings, changing her creator's designation of "slut" to "madly in love with Momonga" just before shutdown; this manipulation burdens him, though Albedo embraces her modified feelings.
Ainz governs Nazarick with caution, prioritizing its security and reputation. He frequently depends on the intellect of subordinates like Albedo and the demon Demiurge, retroactively claiming their complex schemes as his own to project omniscience. He implements policies reflecting his human experiences, such as mandatory rest periods for NPCs to prevent overwork, met with initial resistance due to their programmed devotion.
Externally, Ainz pursues world domination to locate other potential players and establish the Sorcerer Kingdom. He employs strategic benevolence and calculated brutality: saving villages like Carne to cultivate allies while annihilating kingdoms like Re-Estize when necessary. He adheres to a personal code, honoring agreements like sparing the Re-Estize royal army per Gazef Stronoff's dying request, and rewarding useful humans with valuable items. However, he views most lives outside Nazarick as expendable for his goals.
Ainz wields immense magical power from YGGDRASIL, specializing in necromancy, instant-death spells, and summoning. Key abilities include "The Goal of All Life is Death," bypassing immunity to instant death; "Wish Upon a Star," enabling reality-altering effects; and over 700 spells spanning elemental manipulation, time stop, spatial distortion, and information analysis. His physical combat capabilities, secondary but enhanced via the "Perfect Warrior" spell, grant skills comparable to a level 30 warrior. He possesses numerous divine-class items, including two of the Twenty World Items.
His core motivations are locating his former guildmates and preserving Nazarick's legacy. This fuels a profound loneliness, mourning the absence of companions to share his burdens. He venerates the memories of his guild, often invoking their wisdom to guide his decisions in the New World.
