Description
Masami Kurahashi is a supporting character in the film Ring 2. She was originally a high school student living in Tokyo and was friends and classmates with Tomoko Oishi, Yoko Tsuji, and Iwata. In the events of the first film, Masami witnessed Tomoko's death caused by the cursed videotape. By the time Ring 2 begins, she has been profoundly traumatized by that experience. She is now a patient in a psychiatric hospital, where she has become mute and refuses to leave her room. She has developed a severe phobia of televisions, as they trigger terrifying visions associated with Sadako and the well. Her personality is defined by extreme fear, withdrawal, and an inability to communicate her trauma verbally. Masami's role in the story is that of a survivor and a key witness to the curse's effects. She is sought out by Mai Takano and Okazaki, who are investigating the curse, and they find her hospitalized and unresponsive. Her doctor, Oisho Kawajiri, is a paranormal researcher who attempts to use her in experiments to channel and expel the psychic energy she carries. During one of these experiments, her presence inadvertently causes Sadako to materialize on a television in the hospital's lounge, terrorizing other patients. She tries to channel her intense fear into Mai Takano, attempting to transfer the psychic burden. Masami's development in the film traces a tragic arc from a normal teenager to a deeply broken and vulnerable individual, and she ultimately becomes a tool in Kawajiri's efforts to destroy Sadako's powers. Her notable abilities include a heightened psychic sensitivity that connects her to Sadako's curse, allowing her negative emotions and fear to manifest Sadako's imagery and influence electronic devices, particularly televisions. This psychic energy is what Kawajiri seeks to harness. Masami is ultimately killed during Kawajiri's experiment, becoming one of the many victims of the curse's lingering influence.
