Description
Rafe is a supporting character in the anime film Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys. He is a teenage Pokémon Trainer who travels to the high-tech city of LaRousse with his twin sisters, Audrey and Kathryn, along with his friends Sid and Rebecca, intending to compete in the city's Battle Tower. As the older brother of the twins, Rafe is highly protective of them and makes a point of finding someone to watch over them whenever he has to step away to help others.
Rafe is a confident and capable battler, though his confidence sometimes crosses into cockiness. After he and Sid easily defeat Ash and Tory in a Battle Tower match, he becomes boastful and condescending about the victory. That match is won largely because Tory, who is terrified of Pokémon, cannot properly command Ash's Torkoal, which makes the outcome less a testament to Rafe's skill than he initially treats it. Despite this arrogance, Rafe is level-headed and thinks before acting. He is also fair-minded enough to recognize that Ash is a good person and a respectable trainer rather than simply dismissing him as a failure.
Rafe's role in the story grows more serious when Deoxys and its clones begin abducting the people and Pokémon of LaRousse. While others flee and look for hiding places, Rafe stays at the front to defend the group, fighting alongside his Blaziken, Ash, and Pikachu. He and Rebecca observe that the Deoxys clones only carry away things that emit energy, a clue that helps the group understand what Deoxys is searching for. Acting on that understanding, Rafe deliberately allows himself to be captured so that he can reach the place where the abducted citizens and Pokémon are being held. Once there, he is freed with the help of Ash, Pikachu, Tory, Plusle, and Minun, and he helps release everyone. Near the end of the film, he also assists in restoring LaRousse's power so that the second Deoxys has enough energy to regenerate its body.
In terms of character development, Rafe moves from being a boastful competitor to a dependable and selfless ally. His protective instincts, previously focused mostly on his sisters, expand into a broader sense of responsibility for the people and Pokémon of the city during the crisis.
