Description
Masami Saotome is a student at Shinyo Academy and a primary antagonist in Boogiepop and Others. On the surface, he appears to be a normal, well-liked teenager with many friends and a busy social life. This ordinary facade, however, conceals a deeply twisted inner world. Saotome harbors a profound hatred for all living things, including himself, and feels no genuine attachment to anyone. He is highly intelligent, methodical, and emotionally detached, viewing most people as predictable or inferior. His motivations are rooted in a nihilistic worldview and a fascination with control, power, and manipulation. He sees societal norms as illusions and seeks to escape what he considers the banality of human existence.
Saotome’s role in the story begins when he discovers the corpse of a fellow student, Minako Yurihara, and is attacked by the Manticore, a synthetic lifeform created by the Towa Organization. Rather than panic, he offers the Manticore a partnership, convincing it to spare his life and assume Yurihara’s identity. Together, they embark on a series of murders, with Saotome luring victims to the Manticore. He refers to the Manticore as his goddess, but his loyalty is conditional and self-serving; he treats it more as a tool for transcendence than an equal. His actions set off the disappearances that draw the attention of Boogiepop and other investigators.
Key relationships include his symbiotic bond with the Manticore, which strains as their plans face obstacles. Saotome also manipulates classmates and uses his charm to cover up his crimes. He directly confronts Nagi Kirima, the Fire Witch, and kills her by slashing her throat. Later, he fatally stabs the alien Echoes with a poisoned mechanical pencil. In the climax, Saotome sacrifices himself to protect the Manticore from Echoes’ retaliatory beam of light, dying in the process. His death marks the end of his partnership but leaves a lasting impact on the narrative.
Saotome’s development reveals a character who was never able to form real emotional connections. His twisted personality formed from a sense of not belonging, and he rationalizes his monstrous behavior through philosophy and nihilism. He has no supernatural abilities; his threat comes solely from his intellect, charm, and amorality. This makes him one of the few fully human villains in the series, representing the potential for evil in an ordinary person driven by curiosity, pride, and a desire for meaning beyond conventional life.
