Description
Misa Kuroi arrives at yet another high school as a transfer student, though she is far from an ordinary teenager. Possessing genuine magical abilities rooted in black magic, Misa moves from school to school not to study, but to hunt down and destroy the evil supernatural forces that prey on the living. She carries a dagger and a heavy leather bag filled with ritual tools, presenting a calm and mysterious exterior that masks her grim purpose.
The 1997 live-action television series unfolds across 26 episodes, each following a self-contained supernatural crisis. Misa finds herself trapped within a school building after hours alongside a group of students, all of them held for a make-up exam. As sunset falls, the building becomes a sealed prison. The teacher disappears without explanation, and one by one, the students are killed off in horrific and graphic ways. Misa must use her witchcraft to identify the source of the evil, but she faces a critical obstacle: her fellow students suspect that she is the one behind the attacks. She is forced to battle both the supernatural entity and the distrust of those she is trying to protect.
The series establishes a recurring formula. Misa transfers into a high school where human vices such as jealousy, revenge, and obsession have created openings for demonic influence. In one episode, a student loses her title as the most beautiful girl to Misa and turns to supernatural forces to ruin her rival. In another, a young woman refuses to let go of a deceased friend’s spirit and attempts a dangerous summoning. A photographer suffers from nightmares linked to memory loss, while a cursed painting exerts a malevolent influence over a writer and her artist sister. A separate arc follows a group of telepaths who sense their friend being murdered. Misa also works outside of school as a fortune teller, encountering clients whose emotional wounds attract dark spirits.
A larger narrative arc runs beneath the episodic horrors. Misa is driven by a personal tragedy. Her parents were transformed into miniature wooden dolls, and her beloved sister, Anri, was captured by demons. Her ultimate goal is not merely to cleanse the world of evil, but to recover her family. Flashback episodes reveal that a mysterious stranger arrived at her home one year prior, triggering the catastrophe that scattered her family. Misa later journeys to Daimon Village, a remote rural community, to search for her sister. There, she discovers a strange cult and confronts a guardian deity, ultimately entering a place called Pandaemonium to face a devil and make a difficult choice for Anri’s soul.
Her methods are distinct. She does not rely on physical strength but on incantations and ritual magic. Her characteristic chant begins with the words, Eko eko azarak, eko eko zamerak, eko eko kamedios. These spells allow her to dispel spirits, track demons, and protect the innocent. However, her powers are not unlimited. In one story arc, her abilities become partially sealed, forcing her to identify a killer without the full use of her magic. The series also explores the origins of her powers through nightmares and memories of her parents, who sacrificed themselves so that she could learn the craft of magic.
The setting is contemporary Japan, primarily ordinary high schools and suburban neighborhoods, which contrasts sharply with the occult horror that unfolds. The series aired on TV Tokyo and starred Hinako Saeki as Misa Kuroi. A second television series, Eko Eko Azarak -eye-, was broadcast in 2004 with Natsuhi Ueno taking over the role of Misa, continuing the theme of a young witch confronting supernatural evil in a modern setting.
