Description
In the year 2045, humanity is on the brink of collapse. A devastating combination of world war, extreme atmospheric pollution, and mass extinctions has made Earth nearly uninhabitable. To survive, mankind begins a mass exodus to Mars, seeking to terraform the red planet into a new home. However, this escape is not a salvation. A new and terrifying enemy lies in wait in the vastness of space: the Psyches. These are gigantic, unidentified flying creatures of unknown origin that descend from space to attack what remains of humanity.
The only effective countermeasure against this seemingly unstoppable threat is Adam, a humanoid robot created by the brilliant scientist Professor Jesse Maxwell. Unlike conventional machines, Adam is said to be a robot with a soul, possessing a level of artificial intelligence that allows him to think, learn, and perhaps even feel. He serves as the last line of defense, battling the Psyches in high-stakes conflicts where the enemy adapts and learns from each encounter, forcing Adam to constantly innovate and be ingenious to survive. The story follows Adam as he is protected and studied on Earth by his creator, Professor Maxwell, who is often accompanied by his bodyguard, Heather, a determined woman whose initial distrust of the android gradually evolves. As the narrative unfolds, a competition emerges among humans to see who can best defend the planet, complicating Adam’s role as the sole savior.
The series is structured not only around these intense aerial battles but also around the philosophical questions that Adam’s existence raises. As an artificial intelligence designed for combat, Adam struggles to understand abstract human concepts like emotion, duty, and the meaning of the soul. This journey of self-discovery is complemented by infodumps presented as "Science Lessons from Jesse Maxwell," which provide detailed scientific explanations for the technologies and phenomena within the story, grounding the science fiction in real-world theories. The manga is divided into four volumes, chronicling Adam's development from a weapon into a being with his own will. In the final arc, a major revelation upends the premise: the true goal of the Psyches is not the destruction of humanity, but rather the liberation of Adam from human control. They offer him a destiny beyond servitude, forcing Adam to decide where his loyalty—or his heart—truly lies, and what his existence means for the future of the planet.
