Description
In a protected forest watched over by a centuries-old guardian deity, a new god awakens. This is Tsugumo, a fox cub who died and was reborn for the sole purpose of becoming a deity. He is still very young and innocent, unfamiliar with the realities of the world he is meant to protect. His mentor is Yoichi, a tanuki (raccoon dog) who has guarded the forest alone for ages, his heart long since closed off after millennia of solitude.
As Yoichi teaches Tsugumo the laws of life, the cycle of death and rebirth, and how to use his divine powers, the cub naively interprets the older deity's kindness as love. Tsugumo openly professes his desire to stay by Yoichi's side forever, an innocent declaration that slowly revives feelings in Yoichi that he thought he had sealed away forever. The narrative follows the evolution of their relationship from a mentor and pupil to something deeper, exploring themes of immortality, loneliness, and second chances. Tsugumo is bratty and childish, with his power stored in his tail, while Yoichi is grizzled and weary, acting as a father figure who eventually becomes a lover.
The story builds toward moments of drama and tragedy, culminating in a final chapter where Yoichi must make a significant choice about his future. Despite the potential for a tragic cycle of replacement, Yoichi ultimately decides to remain by Tsugumo's side, choosing their bond over his long history of solitary duty. The manga ran as a single volume, serialized in Canna magazine from April 2017 to February 2018.
