Description
Three low-ranking yakuza from the Dogang Group, Kentaro Yamamoto, Ryo Tachibana, and Kazuhiko Sugihara, make a catastrophic mistake that enrages their boss, Kimanjiro Inugane. Faced with the choice between death or a radical punishment, they are forced to travel to Thailand for sex reassignment surgery and extensive cosmetic procedures. Upon their return to Japan, they are reborn as the idol trio Airi, Mari, and Chika, the core members of the newly formed group Gokudolls. The central conflict arises from the brutal disconnect between their hardened, masculine souls and the polished, cheerful female idols they are now forced to become.
The story is set within the unforgiving world of the Japanese entertainment industry, where idol groups are expected to maintain a perfect, smiling facade. The Dogang Group’s leader, Inugane, transforms from a conventional crime boss into a ruthless and manipulative producer. He personally writes their songs, designs their choreography, and subjects them to grueling training sessions, using his yakuza authority to ensure compliance. While the three former gangsters find themselves rising to unexpected stardom, gaining fans and appearing on variety shows, their days are filled with anguish. They struggle with wearing frilly dresses, maintaining high-pitched voices, and controlling their instinctual violent reactions, all while secretly longing to return to their former lives.
The narrative follows the Gokudolls as they navigate various absurd situations. Early arcs establish the horror of their new daily life as they balance live concerts and fan handshake events with their lingering gangster habits. As their popularity grows, they face new challenges, including dealing with a demanding and sadistic manager, Mandarin Kinoshita, and surviving humiliating television segments. A major arc involves the arrival of a new character, an American mafia member named George who, after a similar forced transformation, becomes the fourth member Lina. Another significant plotline introduces Yui Nakamura, a genuine young female idol trainee who joins the group, forcing the three former men to confront the complexities of their secret while training a real girl. Throughout these events, a Victims Association forms, composed of people whose lives have been ruined by the Gokudolls destructive brand of entertainment. The story escalates from simple survival to include nationwide tours, the founding of sister groups, and even international schemes, all while the three protagonists continue their desperate, and largely futile, quest to reclaim any shred of their lost masculinity.
