Description
The manga Saint Seiya: Saintia Shō unfolds parallel to the classic Saint Seiya storyline, beginning just before the Galaxian Wars tournament. A dark omen appears in the sky as the comet Repulse approaches Earth, signaling the return of Eris, the malevolent Goddess of Discord. Eris seeks to plunge the world into chaos, reawakening after ages of slumber to challenge her eternal rival, Athena. The protagonist is a spirited Okinawan middle school student named Shōko, who has been searching for her missing older sister, Kyōko. Unbeknownst to Shōko, Kyōko was chosen years ago to become a Saintia, a special class of female warrior whose sacred duty is not frontline combat but serving as Athena’s personal attendants and protectors of the goddess’s physical vessel, the heiress Saori Kido. The story ignites when evil spirits seeking a new vessel for Eris target Shōko due to her unique spiritual suitability, forcing Kyōko to reveal herself as the Bronze Saint of Equuleus, the Little Horse, to save her sister. When Kyōko is captured and possessed to become Eris’s new mortal form, a guilt-ridden and determined Shōko decides to claim the Equuleus Cloth for herself. She embarks on a harsh training regimen under the stern tutelage of the Silver Saint Pavo Mayura, vowing to rescue her sister and protect Saori.

The narrative is driven by the central conflict between Athena’s forces and the resurrected goddess Eris, who commands an army of fallen warriors known as Ghosts and mystical servants called Dryads. These Dryads, such as the malevolent leader Ruin Atë and the eerie, doll-carrying Malice Emoni, wield supernatural powers drawn from nature. The Saintia are a small but determined group. Alongside Shōko, they include the gentle and refined Dolphin Mii, Saori’s Belgian secretary; the pragmatic Ursa Minor Xiaoling; the proud Northern Crown Katia, who harbors a secret connection to the corrupt Pope; and the ambitious Cassiopeia Erda. Though their mission is to guard Athena, the Saintia are not alone. They receive crucial support from veteran Silver Saints like Eagle Marin and Ophiuchus Shaina, as well as the powerful Gold Saints, including the proud Scorpio Milo and the honorable Leo Aiolia, who provide strength when enemies prove too powerful for the young heroines.

The story moves through several distinct arcs that intertwine with major events from the original manga. The opening arc sees Shōko discovering the world of Saints and the tragic loss of her sister to Eris. This leads into her training and the first assault on Eris’s dimensional temple, where she fights alongside Milo to temporarily seal the evil goddess away. Following this, the narrative shifts to the Galaxian Wars arc, where a grieving Shōko meets the Bronze Saint Pegasus Seiya. Inspired by his determination to fight for his own sister, she resolves to fully embrace her role as a Saintia. During the subsequent Sanctuary arc, which occurs concurrently with the battle against the rogue Gold Saint Saga, the Saintia are tasked with defending Saori’s mansion and later the Sanctuary itself from the lingering miasma and spiritual parasites left in Eris’s wake. The climax revisits the revived Eris, who has fully merged with Kyōko within a mystical realm called the Garden of Eden. In the final confrontation, the Saintia must prove their true purpose is not just to fight, but to heal Athena’s heart and reach their lost comrade through compassion. The series concludes with the resolution of Eris’s threat and Shōko’s ultimate decision regarding her sister’s fate, affirming the Saintia’s unique role as guardians who stand not in front of their goddess, but beside her.
