Description
In July 2016, the Tadamura family travels to the remote mountain village of Hirasaka to attend the funeral of the family matriarch. The group includes the late grandmother’s three sons Masashi, Nobuteru, and Tsunemasa, along with their children: Yukito, a reclusive young man without employment; his step-sister Yue; and cousins Terumi and Teruya. Tensions already exist within the family, as Masashi and his second wife used a significant portion of the grandmother’s savings to cover business losses, causing resentment among the other brothers and leaving Yue, his wife’s daughter from another marriage, treated as an outsider.

On the night of the wake, Yue witnesses an incomprehensible scene: the grandmother’s corpse begins to move on its own and is dragged away into the darkness. The next morning, the family wakes to find the village transformed. Two suns shine in the sky, all electricity and water are non-functional, and a strange, poisonous mist forms a barrier around the village, cutting them off from the outside world. They quickly realize they have been transported to a hostile, hellish dimension where survival is a constant struggle.

The family must navigate this new reality while confronting the supernatural threats that surround them. These include swarms of blood-sucking flies with human faces, razor-sharp leaves, zombie-like creatures, and giant ogres. Their primary refuge is a house protected by a talisman, but even that safety is fragile. As the story progresses, the family members clash over their different philosophies and past grievances, but the desperate situation forces some, particularly Yukito, to abandon his passive nature and take on a leadership role. The group encounters an occult researcher named Miyo Takano, a figure familiar to readers of Ryukishi07’s other works, who provides cryptic guidance but whose true nature and motives remain ambiguous.

The narrative is structured around the family’s fight for survival in a world explicitly identified as Hell. Key arcs include the initial disappearance of the grandmother’s body and the discovery of the new world, the gradual loss of family members to the environment or transformation into inhuman monsters, and the struggle to maintain hope as resources dwindle and the protective talisman is broken. The series concludes with a bittersweet resolution: some of the younger family members manage to escape back to the human world, while others are lost forever. Notably, Yue chooses to remain in Hell, believing she has finally found a place where she belongs, dedicating herself to praying for the souls trapped there.
