Description
A high school student named Akira Himegami awakens from a long cryogenic sleep to find his world has vanished. The city around him is a ruin, ravaged by war. In the time he has been frozen, a global organization called OWEL has seized control of society, and the very concept of marriage has been replaced by a new system known as Elsie.
Disoriented and alone, Akira is soon confronted by an android named Yugure, who bears an uncanny and striking resemblance to his girlfriend, Towasa. Before Akira can process this impossible reunion, Yugure makes a shocking proposal: she asks him to marry her. Confused but clinging to the hope that the real Towasa might still be alive somewhere in this strange new era, Akira agrees to travel with Yugure. Together, they set out on a journey across a post-apocalyptic landscape to search for the woman he lost.
The central conflict stems from the mystery of Akira’s past and Yugure’s true nature. Before his long sleep, Akira and his foster sister Towasa, a genius AI researcher, confessed their love and promised to marry. Their happiness was shattered when an anti-AI extremist shot Akira while he tried to protect Towasa, forcing him into cryonic suspension to save his life. The world Akira discovers 200 years later is one where a devastating war between humanity and artificial intelligence has redrawn the map of civilization.
Akira is a relic of the Common Era, possessing knowledge that the current society has either lost or placed under OWEL’s strict control. Yugure is an advanced combat android from a series known as the Outside Series, created by Towasa to end the AI war. She keeps the circumstances of her creation and Towasa’s fate a secret, deeming it a taboo subject. As they travel, they encounter other androids with the same face as Yugure, such as the aggressive Yoiyami and the gentle Hakubo, who are special commanders for OWEL, pursuing Yugure for unknown reasons.
Notable narrative arcs begin with the prologue of Akira’s life in the 21st century and the tragic assassination attempt that leads to his freezing. The main storyline follows his rude awakening in a village called Hakdoate, his capture by OWEL forces, and his dramatic rescue by Yugure, which kicks off their quest. Subsequent arcs explore their journey through this new world, where they meet allies like the historian Yokurata and the traveling merchant Oboro, while uncovering the truth about the war that ended the world and the role Towasa played in creating both the disaster and its solution. Ultimately, the narrative delves into the evolving forms of love in a new era, forcing Akira to question what his bond with Towasa and his budding connection with the android Yugure truly mean.
