Description
Densuke Mifune is a completely unremarkable first-year student at the prestigious Zashono Academy. His quiet life takes a sudden turn when an accidental run-in with the beautiful and painfully shy Chiharu Shinonome lands him in a situation he never anticipated: membership in the mysterious Eiken Club. Far from a standard academic group, the Eiken Club is a bizarre organization run by the towering and enigmatic Kirika Misono, who seems to take great pleasure in forcing Densuke into a series of embarrassing and dangerous situations for her own amusement. Despite the chaos, Densuke finds himself unable to leave, driven by his growing feelings for Chiharu, who is just as flustered by his presence as he is by hers.
The setting is the sprawling campus of Zashono Academy, a seemingly normal high school that houses the club in its own special building. The club has no clear purpose, instead functioning as a playground for its eccentric female members. This includes Komoe Harumachi, the youngest and most accident-prone member whose clumsy nature often results in her flattening Densuke, and Kyoko Morooka, a childlike genius who uses Densuke as a test subject for her dangerous inventions. Other members include Grace Lin, a British-born acrobat with a subtle affection for Densuke, and Yuriko Shinonome, Chiharu’s energetic sister who enjoys interfering in her sister’s budding romance. Overseeing the chaos is a perpetually ignored advisory teacher who laments that no one can ever remember her name.
The narrative primarily follows Densuke’s daily torment and his awkward attempts to get closer to Chiharu, whose shyness around boys presents a constant obstacle. His life becomes a revolving door of mishaps, from forced cross-dressing to being electrocuted, all while trying to survive the overwhelming physical presence of the other club members. The arrival of new characters creates notable shifts in the dynamic. The introduction of Chiharu’s cousin, Miharu, who works numerous part-time jobs to fund a search for her missing father, adds a layer of unexpected depth. Later, the club faces an existential threat when the strict budget enforcer Cho Ginten arrives, aiming to disband all clubs at the academy. A significant arc involves the return of Shima Kurosawa, a handsome champion from America who challenges Densuke for Chiharu’s affection, leading to a competition that tests Densuke’s resolve. Through all the slapstick violence and absurd fan-service scenarios, the story revolves around the simple question of whether the unnoticed Densuke can ever win the heart of the girl he likes amidst the chaos of the Eiken Club.
