Description
In the crumbling halls of Genen no Shiro, a fortress caught between the spirit world and the living, a young boy named Navin awakens without memory of who he is or how he arrived. The castle is a labyrinthine prison for forgotten souls and cursed beings, all trapped by a centuries-old ritual that went horribly wrong. Navin discovers he possesses a rare ability to see the true names of things, a power that can either break the curses binding the inhabitants or strengthen them forever. Guided by a sharp-tongued fox spirit named Kitsu who has her own mysterious ties to the castle's fall, Navin begins navigating the fortress's shifting corridors. Each level of Genen no Shiro represents a different type of forgetting: erased histories, stolen identities, and loves that were never mourned. The main antagonist is the Shadow Castellan, a figure formed from the castle's collective grief who seeks to use Navin's power to erase the boundary between worlds entirely, plunging both realms into silence. Notable narrative arcs include Navin’s confrontation with the Hall of Shattered Mirrors, where he must reclaim fragments of his own past self from vengeful reflections, and the Descent into the Root Vaults, where the true origin of the curse is revealed to be a betrayed pact between human guardians and spirit nobles. As Navin restores names to the lost inhabitants, he slowly transforms the fortress from a tomb into a sanctuary, leading to a final choice where he must decide whether to open the gates and let everyone return to a world that no longer remembers them or remain as the eternal keeper of the forgotten.
