Description
A mysterious jukebox in a San Francisco record store becomes a time machine for two cousins searching for a missing father. Twelve-year-old Shaheen shares a deep bond with her father Giovanni through their mutual love of music, but his growing obsession with his vinyl collection has created distance between them and led to his sudden disappearance. Along with her fifteen-year-old cousin Tannaz, Shaheen breaks into the local record store where her father was last seen. In the attic, they discover an elaborate custom-built jukebox that plays entire albums rather than singles. When they play a record, the machine glows and transports them to the exact time period when that music was created. The first journey takes them to 1929 Harlem during a Lindy Hop contest at the Savoy Ballroom, where they encounter Bessie Smiths music. Each record becomes a gateway to a different pivotal moment in twentieth-century Black American music history. A James Brown record sends them to his famous Boston concert on the night following Martin Luther King Jr.s assassination. A Grandmaster Flash record drops them into 1980s Venice Beach at the birth of hip-hop. Through these journeys, Shaheen and Tannaz hop across decades from political marches to landmark concerts, hoping to find Giovanni before the music stops. They learn that the jukebox was built by Earl, the record store owner, who also disappeared alongside Shaheens father. The machine has been used to plunder the past for valuable first pressings, but excessive use comes with a cost it gradually steals the users hearing. To rescue both men and return home, the cousins must navigate each era, piece together clues left behind, and understand that true connection to music means balance rather than obsessive collection. The story weaves together family relationships, cultural heritage Shaheen has Italian and Bangladeshi heritage while Tannaz is Bangladeshi American and the power of music to transcend generations.
