Description
A young caregiver named Akane Kuritani takes a live-in position at a secluded Western-style mansion deep in the mountains, hoping for a fresh start. Her patient is the bedridden owner of the house, an elderly woman named Hiwako Miyazono. Upon arriving, Akane is met with an immediately horrifying sight. The woman emanates a putrid stench, her skin is discolored, and a burlap sack covers her face. She appears to be nothing more than a rotting corpse, yet she is still alive and requires care.
The setting is the isolated Miyazono mansion, cut off from the outside world, which amplifies the sense of dread and inescapable horror. The central conflict revolves around the nature of Hiwakos condition. Is she a living person or something else entirely? Akane must confront the terrifying reality of providing nursing care to a being that defies the boundary between the living and the dead, all while uncovering the disturbing secrets held within the household.
As the story progresses, it follows Akane as she navigates this abnormal situation, with each chapter revealing more unsettling truths about her charge and the mansion itself. The narrative is a psychological horror that builds a terrifying atmosphere and delivers shocking reveals, constantly subverting expectations. It is based on a novel by Harumi Miura, with the manga adaptation illustrated by Kazuki Miura and Ayuko. The ongoing series is a seinen horror tale that focuses on the macabre fusion of end-of-life care and supernatural terror.
