Description
Meiko Morita, a kind-hearted high school girl from a struggling family in rural Akita Prefecture, seizes an unexpected opportunity to enroll at the prestigious Amamiya Girls Academy in Tokyo, drawn by the promise of free tuition and a living allowance. However, upon arriving in the capital, she discovers that the student dormitory is actually the Hedgehog, a functioning manga cafe. To cover her expenses, she agrees to live and work at the cafe, setting the stage for a comedic and slightly eccentric slice of life.
The story unfolds primarily within the walls of the Hedgehog, a cafe that doubles as a quirky boarding house for a small group of students. The establishment is owned and operated by Rie Amamiya, a wealthy and airheaded second-year student whose family runs the academy. Rie is an avid manga enthusiast who mistakenly believes Meiko is a famous manga artist with the same name, a misunderstanding that drives much of the early humor as Meiko fails to correct her. The other residents include Marika Suzuki, a lazy and pants-averse popular streamer who is on bad terms with her strict family; and Neo Nakano, a small, innocent-looking girl who is secretly a tech-savvy, hardcore gamer aiming to become a professional. The cast is rounded out by Michika Narumi, a cat-loving underclassman who works at the cat cafe on the building's first floor and becomes a rival-turned-regular customer.
Meiko’s initial challenge is navigating the chaotic life at Hedgehog while being mistakenly revered as a creative prodigy. Her complete lack of otaku knowledge and her earnest, responsible nature constantly contrast with the eccentricities of her new friends, leading to a steady stream of misunderstandings and comic situations. Several recurring narrative patterns emerge. A frequent gag involves one character being bothered by a completely unexpected, trivial detail in a bizarre situation, prompting another to shout, that was the problem?!. Another arc involves the girls facing the potential closure of Hedgehog and devising inventive, often unhinged, marketing strategies to save it, such as using trucks with loudspeakers. The story also includes a vacation arc where the group escapes a heatwave by using Rie’s family wealth to fly to a private villa in Guam, only to find it has also been converted into a manga cafe.
The core of the narrative is the burgeoning friendship among the mismatched residents of Hedgehog. As Meiko works the counter, handles chores, and learns the ropes of the cafe, she slowly adapts to her new life, forming a found family with the other girls. The manga series, written and illustrated by Kumako Hisama, began serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara magazine in December 2018, with the story ongoing.
