Manga
Description
Summer of 1940 in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, a region famous for its pottery. Fourth grader Yoko Matsubara dreams of becoming a ceramic artist, a childhood ambition unaware of the devastating global conflict about to engulf her nation. The manga, created by Haruka Nanase, opens by contrasting this personal artistic passion with the grim historical reality of Japan on the brink of officially entering the Second World War.

The central conflict immediately arises from this clash of innocence and history. Yoko is sent to apprentice at the Oyama Ceramics workshop, run by her friend Yukis family. However, due to the war effort, the master can no longer create traditional Shigaraki vases or tanuki statues. Instead, production is forcibly shifted to crafting kitchen utensils and other practical goods to replace metal items requisitioned for the military. This industrialization of her beloved art form is Yoko’s first confrontation with the way war distorts everyday life.

The narrative deepens as it explores Yoko’s personal losses. Her father has already died in Manchuria, and her mother recently passed away, leaving her living under the care of her grandmother, uncle, and older cousin Shizuko. These domestic griefs are compounded by the looming threat of conscription, highlighted when the masters son, Junpei, prepares for the Imperial Army enlistment exam. The story thus uses the pottery studio as a microcosm for the wider societal upheaval, where economic sanctions from Western powers and the militarization of the country choke the space for normalcy and creative expression.

As the serialization progresses, the narrative arc tracks Yoko’s loss of innocence over approximately sixteen chapters. It documents the slow tightening of wartime restrictions on daily life and how the ancient craft of Shigaraki ware is repurposed for the conflict, including being used for military supplies. Framed as an untold account of life on the home front commemorating the 80th anniversary of the war, Yoko’s journey is a story of artistic resilience under occupation, holding onto a dream of creating beauty while the world around her mandates utility and destruction. The series concludes its run on October 23, 2025, bringing Yoko’s childhood and this dark chapter of Japanese history to a poignant close.
