Manga
Description
The story follows Hajime Sekiguchi, a former life insurance salesman who, in a moment of desperation, leaves his dull corporate job to enter the world of host clubs. He joins a popular but unorthodox establishment called Club One, located just outside the bustling Shinjuku district. Despite his initial belief that the job is not for anyone in their right mind, Hajime attempts to apply his polished sales techniques to attract female clients, carving out an unexpected niche for himself among the staff.

The heart of the series lies in the eccentric personalities of Hajime’s new coworkers at Club One. The club’s top host and representative is Koichi, a cheerful and friendly man who uses a younger brother persona to charm customers. Despite his youthful appearance and his signature hamuhamu move of nuzzling into a client's lap, Koichi has been in the industry for over 20 years and possesses a cool-headed professionalism when it comes to business. Second in line is Ryoichi, a former idol with a handsome appearance, unique sly manner, and excellent singing voice, though his intelligence is lacking. He is heavily in debt to Koichi, owing 200 million yen. The third host is Senichi, a gangster type who appears reluctant to interact with women and dislikes alcohol, yet he remains highly popular. His salary is largely spent on mobile games, and his performance often involves bizarre acts like breaking champagne bottles with his head.

Adding to the cast is the newcomer Taichi, a pharmacy school graduate who defies typical host standards with his glasses and plain appearance. Hajime himself is grounded and logical, often responding to situations with the expression NT, short for naruhodo and tashika ni. The club requires all hosts to add the character for one to their stage names, reflecting the establishment’s name. Hajime respects his experienced colleagues, including Koichi and Ryoichi, who is actually his same age, and finds a natural partnership with Taichi, who helps drive conversations.

The narrative is a four-panel surreal comedy that focuses on the mundane yet absurd daily lives of the hosts. Hajime navigates his new career using his logical nature, while the other hosts deal with their own quirks and pasts. Ryoichi covers up stab wounds from past relationships with tattoos, and Senichi has a twin sister and a complicated history as a flight youth before becoming a host. The story also expands beyond Club One to include rival establishments, such as Club Kudaore in Osaka, whose hosts all have names ending in taro. Another rival club is Trillion, where Koichi was previously the number three host. The series explores themes of reinvention, the impact of alcohol on the body, and the personal struggles behind the glamorous facade of nightlife entertainment. Hajime, for instance, carries trauma from his past as an insurance salesman where he was pressured into pillow business, leading him to avoid sexual contact entirely in his new role. Through episodic misadventures and a consistent parody of the host profession, the characters balance their public personas with their exhausted, real-world selves.
