Description
Mikan Sasaki is an office worker in Tokyo who possesses the ability to see spirits, a family trait that made her childhood difficult until a shrine priestess gave her a protective charm. She has secretly harbored feelings for her boss, Akutsu, for four years, observing how he seems perpetually haunted by numerous evil spirits, with one particularly malevolent presence among them.
On her birthday, feeling lonely after working late, Mikan drinks alcohol despite knowing she cannot handle it, becomes disoriented in a park, and finds herself in a dangerous situation with strangers. Akutsu happens to pass by, rescues her, and brings her to his home, where he tends to her injuries. When she wakes the next morning with no memory of the previous night, she is mortified to find her boss sleeping beside her. Wanting to repay him for his kindness, she is shocked when he makes an unusual request: he asks her to sleep with him. The request is literal. For the first time in years, Akutsu experienced restful sleep with Mikan in his home, as her presence and her charm keep the spirits away.
What begins as an arrangement to help Akutsu sleep becomes something more complicated. The malevolent spirit that torments him does not simply leave. On the first night, it possesses Akutsu and attempts to assault Mikan, forcing her to physically fight it off. Later, when Mikan gives him her protective charm, the spirit instead possesses her body, though Akutsu, a man who demonstrates remarkable awareness of consent, refuses to take advantage of the situation. The spirit later reveals it knew Akutsus late wife and seeks to regain its memories, becoming a sarcastic commentator that follows Mikan around and interferes with the developing romance.
The story reveals that Akutsu is a widower who carries immense guilt over his wifes death. He believes he caused the accident because he left her waiting on Valentines Day, too consumed by emergency work to even send a message. He has been unable to enter the bedroom they once shared. The spirit tormenting him is not his wife, though it claims to have known her in the afterlife. Mikan and Akutsu eventually decide to travel together to the shrine where she originally received her charm, seeking new protections as the old one has broken.
A supporting cast includes Mikans younger brother, who can see spirits even more clearly than she can but refuses to interact with them. He has a peculiar sense of humor and runs away from home to stay with Mikan after fighting with their mother, who does not accept his career choice to become a makeup artist and cosmetics specialist. At work, Mikan has a supportive supervisor who is a close friend and another supervisor who is harsh and critical, though later developments suggest she may not be truly malicious.
The relationship between Mikan and Akutsu progresses slowly, unusual for a manga published for adult women. Despite the intimate premise of sharing a bed, the narrative prioritizes emotional connection and explicit consent. Akutsu consistently asks whether Mikan is comfortable and whether he may proceed further, a rarity even in romance-focused stories. Their nights together become a gradual process of two awkward people drawing closer, healing from their respective loneliness, guilt, and supernatural burdens, one night at a time. The series completed its publication in 2025.
