In the year 1649, Jubei Yagyu, the legendary one-eyed swordsman and head of the Yagyu clan, has largely withdrawn from public life. While watching a Noh performance by his friend and subordinate Chikuami, a ninja army suddenly attacks the village. The attackers bear a crest known as the Koka Aoi no Mon, a modified Tokugawa hollyhock with the character for koka in the center, and they claim to serve Tokugawa Ieyasu from an alternate Edo period where ninja, not samurai, rule. The assault devastates Yagyu village, killing women and children indiscriminately. Jubei manages to repel the initial wave, but Chikuami suggests that by using the power of Noh to cross time, they might change the past and undo the attack. Determined to learn the secret of time-crossing, they journey to Kyoto to find the mystic Jaaami, who is said to possess the forbidden technique known as Tokiwatari. Jubei soon finds himself drawn into the alternate ninja-ruled Edo era, where he faces distorted versions of historical figures. He confronts Tokugawa Hidetada, who seeks to eliminate him to secure the position of shogun, and Tokugawa Iemitsu, who wields an electric attack called Haorai and is protected by an invisible barrier. A reimagined Miyamoto Musashi, called Takezo in this world and a failure at Ganryujima, fights with a steel oar before being transformed into a combat machine. Jubei also allies with a resistance movement led by Amakusa Shiro, alongside other historical names such as Hozoin Inshun and Araki Mataemon. The story is framed by the discovery of a one-eyed corpse in 1650 that appears to be Jubei, but the wrong eye is missing, hinting at the layered mystery of the two Edo periods. The manga version, illustrated by Ken Ishikawa, adapts Futaroh Yamada's novel but emphasizes the conflict between the samurai-led historical world and the ninja-ruled alternate world, incorporating characters from Yamada's other works. The narrative was left incomplete due to the manga's cancellation.
