Description
Petty Officer Third Class Jack O'Hara, a young Japanese-American sailor, reports to the USS George Washington (CVN-73) for his first deployment as the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier sets sail from its home port to its new forward-deployed base in Yokosuka, Japan. The manga follows Jack as he learns the daily rhythms and peculiarities of life aboard a supercarrier: navigating narrow passageways and steep ladders, enduring the cramped practice of hot‑bunking, and mastering damage‑control procedures during a realistic fire drill. He bonds with his shipmates during a festive flight‑deck party and demonstrates quick thinking when he saves a crewmate from walking into a spinning propeller. The narrative also touches on Jack’s personal heritage, culminating in a reunion with his Japanese grandparents, who warmly welcome him. Throughout, the story serves as an educational primer on carrier operations, presenting the vessel’s mission and routines in a low‑key, slice‑of‑life style while deliberately omitting the political controversies and safety debates that surrounded the ship’s nuclear‑powered deployment to Japan.
