Description
In the anthology Manga de Kataru Inagawa Kaidan, the horror radio personality and storyteller Junji Inagawa’s most chilling oral tales are reimagined as a series of stand-alone manga chapters. The first collected volume, Mizuon no Shou (Water Grudge Chapter), centers on water-related hauntings and supernatural encounters. Each story follows ordinary people—a man who receives a strange visitor during a typhoon, a boy who helps a mailman search for something in a swollen river, a fisherman who picks up a drifting rod—as they stumble into eerie events that blur the line between everyday life and the uncanny. There is no single protagonist; instead, the cast shifts with each tale, and the true main character is the lingering dread that ties the anthology together. The setting ranges from quiet suburban homes and rain-soaked riverbanks to lonely fishing spots, all rendered by different manga artists including Takakazu Nagakubo, Sangatou, Kaori Hanada, Yohsuken, Marina Yumekawa, Akane Kogetsu, Kyū Fukumame, and others. The narrative arcs are self-contained, with each chapter delivering a complete ghost story inspired by Inagawa’s signature blend of atmospheric buildup and jolting reveal. Recurring themes include unseen presences, vengeful spirits tied to water, and the unsettling notion that the supernatural can intrude into the most mundane moments.
