Manga
Description
In 1920s Tokyo, the corpse of a young girl is pulled from a creek, and police officer Sawatari is assigned to investigate. The victim’s body bears animal-like bite marks and a pendant engraved with the emblem of a new religious organization called Jiai no Namida (Tears of Love). Sawatari’s inquiry leads him to the group’s charismatic founder, Namidako Inukai, a beautiful teenage girl with long black hair who is said to grant unerring prophecies to wealthy and powerful patrons from her private salon. As Sawatari digs deeper, he becomes convinced that Namidako is linked to a string of suspicious deaths and disappearances, but his superiors—some of whom may be among her followers—block his efforts.

The story unfolds as a tense cat-and-mouse chase. Namidako, serene and calculating, seems always one step ahead, while Sawatari relies on his instincts and the help of a maid who works inside Namidako’s mansion. Beneath the surface of the cult’s veneer of compassion lies a brutal tradition: the Inukai family is cursed with the blood of the dog god (inugami), a spirit that demands human sacrifice. Namidako’s grandmother once tried to escape this fate, but the power passed to Namidako, who was raised to believe that breaking a person’s neck can release their soul and appease the god. The narrative traces how this inherited belief, combined with Namidako’s own thirst for control, turns her into a serial killer who disguises murder as holy ritual.

Over the course of the three-volume series, Sawatari closes in on the truth, uncovering the hidden chamber where Namidako prepares her victims and the complicity of her wealthy patrons. The final arc centers on a planned massacre at the mansion, where Sawatari and the maid work together to stop Namidako before she can complete a grand ritual. The manga concludes with the downfall of the cult and the revelation of the horrific acts carried out in the name of divine love. The work blends period atmosphere, psychological horror, and the grotesque with the unsettling charm of a girl who smiles even as she kills.
