Manga
Description
In a city reduced to ruins after a great war, an elderly man named Souji Abaraya spends his days quietly cleaning the debris and garbage from the streets. To the few residents who notice him, he is just a frail old janitor. In truth, Souji is a legendary soldier from that same war, once feared as the strongest fighter on the battlefield. As terrorist groups and armed criminals exploit the chaos of the post-war world to terrorize the city, Souji takes up his fists again to become the “strongest old man” protecting what little remains of civilization. Without any powered armor or superhuman abilities, he relies solely on his brutal hand-to-hand combat skills and decades of battle experience, often using a simple knuckleduster and a pair of goggles to face enemies that include cyborgs, genetically engineered monsters, and heavily armed militias.

The story opens with Souji encountering two thugs who harass him while he is scavenging for items in a junkyard. A young girl steps in to defend him, and later she becomes one of the hostages in a building siege carried out by a heavily armed terrorist group. When the police are overwhelmed, the authorities secretly call on Souji to intervene. He infiltrates the building, defeats the terrorists, and rescues the children, revealing his true nature to those who witness it. This pattern repeats throughout the series: Souji attempts to live a quiet, unobtrusive life centered on cleaning, but his past and his sense of duty continually pull him into conflicts that threaten the city’s fragile peace.

As the series progresses, the scope of the threats expands. Souji faces off against rival veteran soldiers from the war, underground organizations that exploit advanced technology, and new enemies who challenge him both physically and morally. Notable story arcs include an encounter with a powerful female fighter named Suiha, which leads into a chaotic hot spring travel arc where personal and battle lines blur. The themes of regeneration and renewal are woven into the narrative: Souji’s cleaning work serves as a metaphor for purging the scars of war, and his refusal to retire despite his age underscores a message that strength and purpose do not fade with years. The manga balances intense, visually striking action sequences with quieter moments that explore Souji’s loneliness and the weight of his heroic legacy.

Created by Nariaki Narita and Shuu Kageyama, Shimatsuya Sōji is an ongoing science fiction action story that continues to develop its post-war world and the legend of its aging, indomitable protagonist.
