Description
In a world reshaped by radical science and unchecked human desire, genetically engineered children are born superior from birth, education enforces absolute conformity, and rituals to summon the dead have become commonplace. This is a dystopia built for convenience, control, and indulgence—a carefully arranged garden of horrors where the boundary between progress and madness has dissolved. Shūmatsu no Hakoniwa is an omnibus horror series that follows no single protagonist but instead presents a collection of linked vignettes, each exploring a different facet of this collapsing society.

The stories examine what happens when technology designed to improve human life—confidence-boosting devices, superfoods for famine, surveillance that protects loved ones—is twisted by ordinary weaknesses: the longing to be needed, the wish to escape responsibility, the craving for youth or attention. Every noble intention curdles into a new form of suffering, and every step toward a seemingly better world leads deeper into a nightmare where justice and kindness lose all meaning.

As the series progresses, the separate narratives slowly interconnect, building toward a unified climax that forces the question: what does it truly mean to be happy? The answer reveals itself through layers of psychological terror, culminating in an ending where the last page delivers one final, gut-wrenching twist. Across its six volumes, the manga depicts a world where there is no escape, no sanctuary—only the slow, creeping realization that the nightmare was already set in motion before anyone noticed.
