Description
A frog named Grenouille has just moved into Animal Village, a community of cute, anthropomorphic animals who run various shops. While exploring, he stumbles upon an unusual establishment called the Creepy and Freaky, run by a polite rabbit known as Mr. Bunny. The shop sells fear itself. Mr. Bunny invites Grenouille to open a grotesque box decorated with a horrifying face, and from inside the box, a scary story from the human world spills out. Each chapter presents a new box and a new self-contained horror tale, ranging from urban legends to bizarre phenomena.
The stories initially appear to be standalone ghost stories. One early tale involves a high school girl who receives a strange metal ball from a creature in the gardening club, while another follows an ethnologist named Ushiro Yonekura investigating a taxi whose passengers vanish and leave the seat soaked in amniotic fluid. Around the third chapter, however, the separate narratives begin to intertwine. Characters from different stories reappear, and events that seemed unrelated reveal hidden connections, gradually forming an overarching plot.
The human world cast expands to include Ayumi Endou, a seemingly ordinary high school girl whose true identity is a mysterious figure known as Ume-ko-san, who uses a shovel to bury and erase scary stories. Another human, Sou Yoda, is a con artist who sells fake cursed goods that inadvertently create real monsters. Yonekura is recruited by the Canary Organization, a secret society dedicated to investigating paranormal activity, where she partners with a man whose head is a computer monitor. A mysterious, horned, haniwa-like entity named N?SS?T9 appears in Animal Village and displays the ability to manipulate Grenouille's memories.
The manga is built around numerous layered mysteries. A strange symbol resembling an eraser balanced on a scoop of ice cream appears repeatedly, carved into fruit in Animal Village and left at the scene of paranormal incidents in the human world. A hidden countdown, starting from 58 and decreasing by one each chapter, is concealed in background details, QR codes, and character numbers across the series. As the countdown approaches zero, the separate threads of the human-world horror stories and the peaceful Animal Village frame narrative converge, leading to a climax that recontextualizes everything that came before.
