Archaeologist Kogami Ryuichi unearths the legendary Dragon in the mountains of Iwate Prefecture and sends a photo to his fiancée, Miyuki, before he is assassinated by men in black who proceed to destroy the site to conceal the discovery. The sword Ryuichi carried begins to glow, and across a gap of twelve centuries the spirit of the Emishi warrior Aterui awakens inside Ryuichi's body. The beings that ancient people called gods were in truth extraterrestrial visitors who split into two factions: those who chose to coexist with humanity and those who sought to subjugate or annihilate Earth. Aterui was once the guardian of the Dragon, a power source that serves as an alien spaceship's drive core, and he had hidden it away to keep it from the destructive faction. That faction, led by the reincarnated general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, has spent the intervening centuries infiltrating human institutions and now plans to seize the Dragon, destroy Earth, and return to its home star. Aterui, reborn but still carrying his ancient warrior instincts, heads for Tokyo to confront Tamuramaro and his followers in a final battle that blends martial arts, political satire, and cameos from contemporary world figures. The compact story merges Japanese history and myth with a science‑fiction premise in which legendary figures such as Aterui and Tamuramaro are recast as extraterrestrial beings locked in a secret war that has shaped human civilization for millennia.
