Description
Ayame Nakatsukasa, a college student with the ability to see spirits, inherits her late grandfather’s ability to perceive and interact with the supernatural. After his passing, Ayame discovers that her grandfather had incurred a massive debt to the spirits of the Kakuriyo realm, a hidden world where ayakashi (supernatural beings) reside. To settle this debt, she is taken to Kakuriyo by Ōdanna, a powerful ogre spirit who claims her as his bride in lieu of payment. Unwilling to accept this fate, Ayame negotiates with Ōdanna to work off the debt by running a small restaurant within the Tenjin-ya, an inn catering to ayakashi guests.
The narrative revolves around Ayame’s efforts to establish herself in Kakuriyo, using her culinary skills to win over the spirits and navigate the complexities of their world. Her determination to repay the debt on her own terms and her compassion for the ayakashi lead to various encounters and challenges. She befriends a range of spirits, including Ginji, a fox spirit who becomes her ally, and faces adversaries who question her place in the spirit realm. Ayame’s human perspective and resourcefulness often bring fresh solutions to the problems faced by the ayakashi, fostering mutual respect and understanding between humans and spirits.
The story balances episodic tales of Ayame’s interactions with the ayakashi guests at Tenjin-ya with an overarching plot involving her growing relationship with Ōdanna and the mysteries surrounding her grandfather’s past. Themes of debt, obligation, and cultural exchange are explored as Ayame bridges the gap between the human and spirit worlds. Her journey is marked by her resilience, kindness, and determination to carve out her own path in Kakuriyo, challenging the expectations placed upon her by both humans and spirits. The series combines elements of fantasy, romance, and slice-of-life, offering a blend of lighthearted moments and deeper emotional undertones.
