"The Asterisk War" is set in a futuristic world where humanity has developed advanced technology and integrated it with supernatural abilities known as "Genestella." The story takes place in Rikka, also called Asterisk, a city that hosts six prestigious schools where students, referred to as Genestella, compete in battles called Festas. These Festas are high-stakes tournaments that determine rankings and influence, with the ultimate prize being the fulfillment of any wish.

The protagonist, Ayato Amagiri, transfers to Seidoukan Academy, one of the six schools, after a mysterious incident involving his sister, Haruka, who disappeared years prior. Ayato possesses a powerful ability called the Ser-Veresta, a rare and dangerous weapon that he struggles to control. Upon arriving at Seidoukan, he encounters Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld, a skilled duelist and princess of a small European nation. Julis challenges Ayato to a duel, which ends in a draw, and the two form an uneasy partnership. Together, they aim to compete in the Festa, with Julis seeking to win to save her homeland and Ayato hoping to uncover the truth about his sister’s disappearance.

As the story progresses, Ayato and Julis form alliances with other students, including Claudia Enfield, the student council president with a hidden agenda, and Saya Sasamiya, Ayato’s childhood friend and a skilled marksman. The group faces numerous challenges, including rival schools, powerful opponents, and the shadowy organization behind the Festas, known as the Integrated Enterprise Foundation. The Foundation’s motives remain unclear, but its influence over the city and the Festas suggests a deeper, more sinister purpose.

The narrative explores themes of competition, loyalty, and the pursuit of personal goals within a highly structured and politically charged environment. Ayato’s journey is marked by his growth as a fighter and his efforts to protect his friends while uncovering the secrets of his past.
