Shibamoto's career in entertainment began in his teens after winning a national new artist competition in 1972, leading to a debut as a singer in 1973. His interest then shifted to theater, and he performed in musicals before making a pivotal decision to pursue voice acting. In 1985, he chose an anime role over a part in a stage production, making his voice acting debut in the series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Since then, Shibamoto has built an extensive and varied career in anime, video games, and dubbing foreign films. He is known for a wide range of roles across several decades. Examples of his anime voice work include Dick Tipton in Little Lord Fauntleroy, Jim in the Spirit of Wonder series, Hiroshi Ohsawa in Idol Densetsu Eriko, Kazuo Takahata in ESPer Mami, and Karl Björn Andrésen in The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. He also voiced Al and AlcuAd Solte in New Dominion Tank Police, and Raphael in the Japanese dub of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Legend of the Supermutants. His filmography includes long-running and iconic franchises such as Mobile Suit Gundam, Doraemon, Detective Conan, and Crayon Shin-chan. Beyond anime, Shibamoto has been a prolific voice actor in the tokusatsu genre, providing voices for numerous monsters and characters in Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series, including Kamen Rider Agito and Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger. He has also contributed his voice to many Japanese dubs of Western films.

Throughout his career, Shibamoto has had recurring professional collaborations, most notably with fellow voice actor Mayumi Tanaka. The two met while working on a stage play and have appeared together in numerous projects both before and after their personal relationship.

In addition to his performance work, Shibamoto is recognized for his contributions to the industry as a lecturer, mentoring new talent at 81 Produce and Bunka Gakuen. His career is marked by versatility across singing, stage performance, and a long-standing presence in voice acting for anime, live-action, and dubbed productions.
