Gakuto Mikumo
Description
Gakuto Mikumo is a Japanese novelist and light novel author born on August 31, 1970, in Oita Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of English at Sophia University. Before becoming a writer, he worked at a motorcycle company, but decided to pursue writing after a moment of inspiration during a train ride. He made his literary debut in 1998, winning the silver prize in the 5th Dengeki Game Novel Award for his debut work, Cold Gehenna. He subsequently won the Japan SF Rookie of the Year Award in 1999 for M.G.H. and a special prize in the Sneaker Awards in 2000 for Earth Reverse. Mikumo is a member of several professional organizations, including the Mystery Writers of Japan, the Honkaku Mystery Writers Club of Japan, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Japan.
Mikumo is best known for creating several light novel series that have been adapted into anime. His notable original works include Asura Cryin’, a series published by Dengeki Bunko that ran for 14 volumes from 2005 to 2010, which received a manga adaptation and was later adapted into an anime television series. He wrote The Mystic Archives of Dantalian (Dantalian no Shoka), an eight-volume series published under the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint from 2008 to 2011. This series was adapted into a 2011 anime television series produced by the studio Gainax. His most prolific work is Strike the Blood, a 24-volume series (comprising 22 main novels and two side story volumes) published by Dengeki Bunko from 2011 to 2020. The series spawned a comprehensive anime franchise, including multiple television anime seasons and several original video animation (OVA) series such as Strike the Blood III and Strike the Blood FINAL. Beyond his original novels, Mikumo has also contributed to the video game industry, serving as a writer for the 2006 title Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.
Across his body of work, Mikumo is recognized for incorporating elements of mystery, science fiction, and fantasy, often building narratives around intricate settings and supernatural mechanics. His writing is characterized by the use of detailed, unique terminology and a tendency towards a self-described "chuunibyou" (adolescent delusions) style. He is noted for his skill in crafting standalone episodic stories, a strength evident in the structure of The Mystic Archives of Dantalian, though some commentary suggests his long-form narrative arcs can present challenges. His significant contribution to the light novel and anime industries is marked by the commercial success and complete animated adaptation of Strike the Blood, a rare achievement that allowed the story to be fully visualized across multiple seasons and OVAs.
