HoneyWorks
Description
HoneyWorks is a Japanese multimedia creative collective known for originating the Confession Executive Committee (Kokuhaku Jikkō Iinkai) franchise, which has been adapted into anime films, television series, and manga. Rather than an individual creator, HoneyWorks functions as a musical and illustrative group that writes songs, produces videos, and develops character-driven romantic stories that are told across multiple media platforms.
The group began in 2010 when composers Gom and shito, who were already active on the video-sharing website NicoNico Douga, recruited illustrator Yamako to create visuals for their music. Gom and shito originally crafted songs using vocal processing software, and Yamako’s illustrations helped give the music a distinct visual identity. Over time, the collective expanded to include supporting members who contribute guitar, keyboards, drums, animation, and additional illustration work. The group is also known by the nickname Haniwa.
HoneyWorks built its following by uploading original Vocaloid songs to NicoNico Douga, but it transitioned to mainstream recognition after signing with the label MusicRay'n in 2014. That same year, the group began collaborating with vocalist CHiCO to form the unit CHiCO with HoneyWorks. The collective’s musical style focuses heavily on pop and rock compositions tied directly to narratives about high school romance and friendship.
The core of HoneyWorks’ identity as an original creator lies in the Confession Executive Committee series, also referred to as the Ren'ai Series or Love Series. This franchise follows an interconnected cast of high school characters whose romantic relationships and personal struggles are depicted across dozens of songs, each accompanied by animated music videos. The series has expanded into light novels, manga adaptations, stage productions, and games.
Several anime works have been produced based on HoneyWorks’ original concepts. The theatrical film I've Always Liked You (Zutto Mae Kara Suki Deshita) was released in 2016, followed by The Moment You Fall in Love (Suki ni Naru Sono Shunkan o) later that same year. A television anime series titled Our Love Has Always Been 10 Centimeters Apart (Itsu Datte Bokura no Koi wa 10 Centi Datta) aired as a six-episode program beginning in November 2017. The anime Heroines Run the Show: The Unpopular Girl and the Secret Task, which features characters and music from the HoneyWorks universe, premiered in 2022. The film LIP×LIP FILM×LIVE: Kono Sekai no Tanoshimikata focuses on the fictional idol duo LIP×LIP, who originated within the Confession Executive Committee series. The song Tokyo Autumn Session is also part of the HoneyWorks catalog and has been performed within the franchise’s multimedia presentations.
Recurring themes across HoneyWorks’ original works include unrequited love, friendship dynamics, school festivals, summer vacations, and the emotional milestones of adolescence. The group consistently prioritizes youthful, sentimental storytelling over fantasy or science fiction elements, which distinguishes it from other musical storytelling projects. The art style, largely shaped by Yamako’s illustrations, features bright colors and expressive character designs that evoke the visual language of shōjo manga.
In the anime industry, HoneyWorks holds significance as a creator-driven property that originated from online fan culture rather than from a traditional publisher or production committee. The group’s ability to generate anime adaptations, character song albums, and merchandise directly from its own song lyrics and music videos demonstrates a reverse adaptation path where user-generated content on platforms like NicoNico Douga evolved into commercial multimedia franchises. HoneyWorks has also contributed theme songs to numerous anime series not directly tied to its own franchise, including Blue Spring Ride, Gintama, Haikyū!!, and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. In 2023, the group expanded into virtual talent management by launching the Vtuber agency AiceClass. Through these activities, HoneyWorks has established itself as a bridge between the Vocaloid songwriting community and mainstream anime production.
