Daisuke Aizawa

Description
Daisuke Aizawa is a Japanese author known as the original creator of the light novel series The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!). His career began with the serialization of web novels, a path that led to the creation of one of the notable isekai franchises of recent years.

Aizawa started writing as an amateur on the user-generated web novel platform Shousetsuka ni Narou. It was there that his story first gained attention, eventually leading to a publishing deal with Kadokawa’s Enterbrain imprint. The first volume of The Eminence in Shadow was published as a light novel in November 2018, featuring illustrations by Tōzai. This publication marked his formal debut as a professional author.

His original work became the foundation for a significant media franchise. The light novel series, which is still ongoing, spawned a manga adaptation illustrated by Anri Sakano that began serialization in Comp Ace in December 2018. Aizawa’s role as the original creator is central to all subsequent adaptations. In the anime industry, he is credited for the anime series The Eminence in Shadow, its second season, and the upcoming film The Eminence in Shadow - Lost Echoes, all of which are based on his original story. He is also credited as the original creator for the chibi-style comedy spin-off series Kage-jitsu!, which parodies his main work. Beyond his own franchise, Aizawa’s creation was incorporated into the crossover chibi comedy series Isekai Quartet, where he is credited for the original work in its third season, alongside the creators of other major isekai properties.

The creative process for The Eminence in Shadow originated with its protagonist, Cid. In an interview, Aizawa stated that the character, who lives by his own unique code, was the first element he conceived, with the story developing from there. He described the initial transition from a web novel to a published light novel as challenging, and noted that writing became more complex after the fourth volume, where the story diverged from the original web serialization. His creative inspirations come from a wide range of sources, including films, anime, and manga, with a focus on analyzing the feelings these works evoke to develop his own stories. He has cited the author of Overlord and the author of Mushoku Tensei as creators he admires within the genre.

Aizawa’s significance in the industry lies in the success of his single property, which rapidly expanded from a web novel to a multi-platform success. The Eminence in Shadow franchise includes a light novel series, multiple manga adaptations, two seasons of an anime television series, a spin-off anime, a smartphone game, and an announced feature film. The story’s premise, centered on a protagonist who role-plays as a hidden mastermind only to find his fantasies are reality, has been noted for its satirical take on isekai and power-fantasy tropes, contributing to its popularity.
