Emily Jenness
Description
Emily Jenness is the professional name of an American voice actress known for her extensive work in English-language dubs of anime, particularly within the long-running Pokémon franchise. She was born Emily Ann Bauer on July 29, 1981, and is also occasionally credited as Emily Blau. Jenness grew up in Millburn, New Jersey, and developed an early interest in performing arts, taking classes at a local school and participating in professional productions at the Paper Mill Playhouse. She later attended New York University, where she graduated cum laude in 2002 with degrees in both Business and Theatre.
Jenness's career in anime dubbing began in the early 2000s, with early roles in series such as Ninja Nonsense and Ah! My Goddess. However, her most prominent and defining work began in 2007 when she joined the cast of the Pokémon anime during its tenth season, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Her most significant role from this point forward was as Dawn, a Pokémon Coordinator and traveling companion to the series' protagonist, Ash Ketchum. Jenness voiced Dawn across multiple series and films, including Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon Best Wishes!, and Pokémon Journeys: The Series, as well as in theatrical releases like Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, Pokémon: Giratina & the Sky Warrior, and Pokémon: Arceus & the Jewel of Life. In a notable recurring performance, she also provides the voice for Cynthia, the Champion of the Sinnoh region, a role she has reprised for many years, including in the special Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles. Her association with Pokémon extends beyond these central characters to numerous other roles, including the Team Rocket operative Matori, Officer Jenny, and a wide array of daily characters and Pokémon voices.
Beyond the world of Pokémon, Jenness has secured other significant roles in anime dubbing. She was a main cast member in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, providing the voices for Zuzu Boyle and her counterparts Celina, Rin, Lulu Obsidian, and Ray Akaba. She also voiced the character Lastelle in the English adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Her voice work extends into video games as well, such as providing the voice for the guide Monita in Nintendo Land and reprising her Yu-Gi-Oh! role in games like Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links.
A notable achievement in her career is the longevity and consistency of her performances within the Pokémon series, voicing beloved characters like Dawn and Cynthia for over fifteen years. Her work is characterized by a versatility that allows her to portray both lead heroines and a wide spectrum of supporting characters. In addition to her on-screen work, Jenness is a prolific and award-winning narrator of audiobooks, having received multiple accolades such as Golden Earphones Awards and starred reviews from Publishers Weekly for her work in that field. She also runs an acting studio in New Jersey and remains active in theater productions in the New York City metropolitan area.
