Hidekichi Matsumoto
Description
Hidekichi Matsumoto, whose name is written in Japanese as 松本ひで吉, is a Japanese manga artist who began her professional career in 2008. Her debut came from winning the first Shonen Rival Comic Award with a short version of what would become her first serialized work, Honto ni Atta! Reibai-Sensei. Following this award, the series began regular publication in the inaugural issue of Monthly Shonen Rival magazine in 2008.
Honto ni Atta! Reibai-Sensei is a four-panel supernatural comedy manga that follows Kibayashi-sensei, a teacher whose expertise lies in communicating with spirits and performing exorcisms, contrasting sharply with her complete unfamiliarity with the ordinary world. The series ran until 2014 and was collected in 20 volumes. In 2011, it received a television anime adaptation consisting of five-minute episodes, and it also won the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the children’s category that same year.
In 2011, Matsumoto began a second major series, Survival Game Club!, known in Japanese as Sabagebu!. Serialized in the少女漫画 magazine Nakayoshi until 2017, this manga shifted focus to a school setting where the protagonist joins a survival game club that engages in airsoft battles. Like her debut work, it was adapted into an anime television series that aired in 2014.
Beyond these two series that received anime adaptations, Matsumoto has created several other manga. She authored the series境界之米可莉娜 (Kyoukai no Mikurina) and later began a serialized work titled いきものがたり. Another notable work is the ongoing series ねこ色保健室 (Nekoiro Hoken-shitsu), which has been serialized in Nakayoshi since 2017.
Matsumoto is also the creator behind With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun, which is directly cited in the user query. This work originated as sketches posted on Twitter before being compiled into print volumes. The series depicts the charming and humorous daily life of the author living with a dog and a cat, highlighting their distinct personalities. It has been published in English by Kodansha USA Publishing under its Vertical Comics imprint.
Across her bibliography, Matsumoto frequently employs short-form or four-panel storytelling, blending humor with slice-of-life elements, whether in the supernatural setting of a school, the action-oriented yet comedic world of a hobby club, or the intimate, observational stories of pet ownership.
