Before joining his current agency, he was a member of the acting unit PureBoys from its founding in June 2007 until March 2008. He is the son of actor Mita Kunio and former actress Nakayama Mari, and he has an older brother who is also an actor. Nakayama graduated from Horikoshi High School.

Nakayama began his entertainment career in 2004 with a film role after being introduced to a producer by his mother. His early work consisted primarily of live-action television dramas and films. He gained experience in the tokusatsu genre with appearances in Kamen Rider Hibiki in 2005 and Kamen Rider Kiva in 2008. He was also a regular cast member on the Disney Channel program Playhouse Disney as MC Masei from 2007 to 2011. On stage, he is known for his role as Sadaharu Inui in the Musical The Prince of Tennis in 2006 and 2007.

A significant and recurring part of his career has been his involvement with the Garo franchise. He first appeared in the series in a live-action role, playing the protagonist Raiga Saejima, the Golden Knight Garo, in the 2014 television series Garo: Makai no Hana and subsequent related projects. He reprised this live-action role in the 2019 film GARO - Under the Moonbow.

His work as a voice actor is also closely tied to this franchise. He provided the voice for the character Raikō in the anime television series Garo: Guren no Tsuki in 2015. He returned to voice the same character in the 2018 animated film Usuzumizakura -Garo-, which serves as a continuation of that anime series. These two roles constitute his major, confirmed voice acting credits. More recently, he took on a voice acting role in the 2022 anime series My Dress-Up Darling, playing the character Manabu Hasegawa. He is set to reprise this role in the series' second season in 2025.

Beyond his voice work in anime, Nakayama has maintained a steady career as a live-action actor, with numerous television and film credits that include the 2023 drama Get Ready! and the 2024 series Smiling Matryoshka.
