Fumio Matsuoka

Description
Fumio Matsuoka was a Japanese voice actor born on April 14, 1933, in Tokyo, Japan. He passed away on July 20, 2022, at the age of 89. He was a graduate of the Nihon University College of Art. Before fully committing to voice acting, he worked as an assistant director at an independent production company. His career in performance began with various theater companies, including Theatre Company Ashi, Theatre Company Mozu, and Theatre Company Kawa, before he joined Office Hisashi, which later merged into the talent management firm Production baobab, where he was affiliated at the time of his death.

Matsuoka was known for his calm and dignified voice, which led him to be frequently cast in roles for older men and elderly characters. While he often portrayed kind and benevolent figures, his range also allowed him to effectively play characters who concealed a sinister nature behind a gentle facade.

His career was extensive, spanning decades and including numerous notable roles in anime, OVA, film, and video games. He is perhaps best recognized by modern audiences as the voice of Shiro Suzuki, the father of Sonoko Suzuki and chairman of the Suzuki financial group, in the long-running Detective Conan (Case Closed) series. He voiced this character in multiple installments, including the films Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, and the TV special Detective Conan: Episode "ONE" - The Great Detective Who Shrrank.

In addition to this prominent role, he had a wide array of other performances. He played Minami Kuramitsu in the Tenchi Muyo! franchise, including the original OVA series Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki and its television spin-off Tenchi Muyo! GXP. He was the voice of the wise and elderly in various series, such as the Sage in Kino's Journey and the monk in the High School Inuyasha spinoff, as well as the villainous Saint Hakushin in the original Inuyasha. His other anime roles include Tatara in Madara, Cha Genmai in Moeru! Oniisan, Toshiaki Ōishi in Hikari no Densetsu, the first voice of the father in the TBS version of Obake no Q-Taro, and Dr. Manabu Asuka in the second season of Superbook.

Beyond anime, his work extended to foreign film dubbing. He was the Japanese voice of Alfred Pennyworth, portrayed by Michael Gough, in the DVD versions of the 1990s Batman film series. He also contributed his voice to video games, such as Odin Sphere and the Tales series. A notable recurring collaboration throughout his career was with fellow voice actor Kōichi Hashimoto, with whom he worked on at least thirteen projects.
