Bill Flynn
Description
Bill Flynn was an American actor and voice actor known for his extensive work in English dubs of anime series, primarily for Funimation. He was born on September 9, 1938, in Yonkers, New York, and passed away on July 4, 2025, at the age of 86. His path to acting was indirect; he initially served as a pilot and flight instructor at Vance Air Force Base before leaving the military in 1970 to earn a master's degree in rehabilitation counselling and work with disabled adults. He began pursuing acting in the 1980s, becoming a familiar presence in the Dallas theater scene and later transitioning to film, television, and voiceover work.
Flynn's voice acting career was marked by a long and fruitful association with Funimation, starting in 2003. He became a regular talent for the studio, often lending his voice to older, mature characters, earning a reputation as a go-to actor for such roles. His versatility was enhanced by his ability to perform various accents, a skill he developed from his time living in Europe and his fluency in German and French.
Among his numerous anime credits, Flynn is perhaps best recognized for two significant, long-running roles. He was the original English voice of Dr. Hershel Agasa in Funimation's dub of Case Closed (also known as Detective Conan), appearing in the early seasons and the first six movies. He also voiced the character Genzo in the Funimation dub of One Piece, a role he performed for many years, including in material released as recently as 2019. In addition to these, his filmography includes a vast array of supporting and guest roles in major series. As specifically noted, his voice credits include Friedrich IV in The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These, Aranami in the film Hal, and Grandpa in Heaven's Lost Property Final – The Movie: Eternally My Master. His other notable appearances include roles in Attack on Titan as Roy, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as Grumman, Fairy Tail as Crux and Robaul, and Barakamon as Kosaku Kotoishi.
Beyond his voice work, Flynn was a respected member of the acting community. He also worked extensively in on-screen roles for film and television. He shared his expertise by developing and presenting a seminar titled The Care and Feeding of Actors for film students at local colleges, aimed at helping young filmmakers work effectively with professional actors. He also served as a judge for film festivals and was involved with the Dallas Producers Association. His stage work included an Actor of the Year award for his performance in a play about a musician during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
