Ed Blaylock

Description
Ed Blaylock was an American radio announcer and voice actor known for his work in English dubs of anime series, particularly for his roles as Führer King Bradley in Fullmetal Alchemist and Sengoku in One Piece. Born Thomas Edwin Blaylock, Jr. on September 6, 1952, in Dallas, Texas, he built a career that spanned both on-air broadcasting and voice acting for animation.

Before and during his voice acting career, Blaylock was a familiar voice on Dallas radio. He worked as the weekday evening announcer for the classical music station WRR Classical 101.1 FM for over a decade. His performance background also included appearing in stage plays in the Dallas area and participating in a Living History program, where he portrayed historical figures such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin for schoolchildren. He also had behind-the-scenes experience in film production, working as a boom operator on sets in the United States and Europe.

In the realm of anime voice acting, Blaylock is most prominently recognized for his portrayal of Führer King Bradley. He provided the voice for this complex antagonist in both the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series and its more faithful adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He reprised the role in related media, including the Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium Collection OVAs and the film Conqueror of Shamballa, in which he voiced the character Fritz Lang.

Another of his significant and long-running roles was that of Fleet Admiral Sengoku in the hit series One Piece. He voiced the character across numerous episodes, as well as in the films One Piece Film: Strong World and One Piece Film: Z. His performance as Sengoku continued in specials like One Piece 3D2Y: Overcoming Ace's Death, which were released after his passing.

Beyond these hallmark roles, Blaylock built an extensive filmography, lending his voice to a wide variety of characters in numerous other series. He voiced the villainous Jose Porla in Fairy Tail, the loyal butler Sebas Tian in the first season of Overlord, and the Director in Barakamon. His other credits included roles in major franchises such as Case Closed, Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, Baccano!, A Certain Magical Index II, and many more, often providing voices for additional characters. Due to the nature of the dubbing industry, which often records in Texas, he frequently collaborated with other voice actors based in the region, such as Vic Mignogna.

Ed Blaylock passed away on April 19, 2017, at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer. His final roles, including appearances in Shin Godzilla and the One Piece special Episode of Sabo, were released posthumously. Following his death, his various roles were taken over by other voice actors; for instance, Philip Weber succeeded him as Sengoku, and Bill Jenkins took over the role of Sebas Tian. He is remembered for the distinctive authority and depth he brought to his many characters.
