His entry into voice acting is closely tied to his broader career in entertainment, which began with his rise to fame as a rock vocalist in the 1990s with the band Malice Mizer before he launched a successful solo career.

A significant aspect of Gackt's voice acting filmography is his recurring association with the historical figure Uesugi Kenshin. He first portrayed this legendary samurai warlord in the 2007 live-action television drama Fuurin Kazan, a performance that earned him a TV Navi Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. He later lent his voice to the same character in the anime series Tono to Issho and its follow-up, Tono to Issho: Gantai no Yabō, which are comedic parodies of Sengoku period generals.
