Rocio Garcel
Description
Sofía María del Rocío Garza Ramírez, known professionally as Rocío Garcel, is a Mexican actress and voice director born on September 18, 1948, in Mexico City. She began her career in dubbing at the age of eleven in 1959, after requesting an opportunity from her neighbor, actor Guillermo Romano. She studied acting at the Instituto Andrés Soler to refine her technique. Garcel is also a singer and was a member of the musical group Las chic's.
Rocío Garcel is widely recognized for her extensive work in anime dubbing, with a career spanning over six decades. One of her earliest and most iconic roles was as the voice of Astro Boy in the 1980 series, a part that brought her international fame. However, her most enduring and celebrated character is Bulma from the Dragon Ball franchise. She has voiced Bulma in five anime series and nine films, including Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Super, and the recent films Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Her portrayal was temporarily recast during the Majin Boo and Dragon Ball GT sagas due to a veto by the dubbing company Intertrack, but she returned to the role starting with Dragon Ball Z Kai.
Another signature role for Garcel is Luna, the advisory cat in the Sailor Moon series. She voiced the character throughout the classic anime and its films. While she was unable to reprise the role for Sailor Moon Crystal due to health reasons, she returned to the franchise to voice Queen Nehellenia in the 2021 film Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal, a role previously performed by her sister, Sylvia Garcel.
Her other notable anime roles, many of which were listed by the user, include the title character in Nobody's Boy Remi, Taro in Taro the Dragon Boy, Julie in Himitsu no Akko-chan, the voice of Hermana de Saske in the film Magic Boy, El principito in The Adventures of the Little Prince, and Princess Sapphire in Princess Knight. Her repertoire also includes Remi in Remi, the boy from no one, Chispita in Speed Racer, and Zelda in The Legend of Zelda.
Beyond anime, Garcel's career is marked by her extensive work in dubbing Hollywood productions, particularly after moving to Los Angeles in the 1980s. She has been the official Spanish voice for actresses such as Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Michelle Pfeiffer in numerous films. She also provided iconic voices for characters like Ellen Ripley in Alien, Bastian in The NeverEnding Story, and She-Ra in She-Ra: Princess of Power. Her work in animation extends to English-language series, voicing characters like Demona in Gargoyles and Susie Carmichael and Dil Pickles in Rugrats.
Rocío Garcel comes from a family deeply involved in dubbing. She is the sister of voice actress Sylvia Garcel, the aunt of Vanessa Arvizu, and is married to actor and dubbing director Jorge Roig, with whom she has a son, Jorge Roig Jr., who is also a voice actor. After a brief pause in 2018 due to health issues, she has continued to work in the industry and remains an active and revered figure in Latin American dubbing.
