Description
Remi Barberin, born Richard Milligan, enters life as a Parisian foundling discovered by Jerome Barberin. Raised unaware of his adoption in the impoverished village of Chavanon by his loving foster mother, his childhood ends abruptly at age eight. Jerome, embittered by injury and debt, reveals Remi's origins and sells him to the traveling performer Vitalis.

Under Vitalis's stern but paternal guidance, Remi learns music, literacy, and survival, journeying across France with Vitalis's troupe: the dogs Capi, Zerbino, Dolce, and the monkey Joli-Coeur. Remi forms profound bonds with Vitalis and the animals, especially Capi, forging resilience and optimism amidst hunger, exposure, and prejudice. Tragedy strikes repeatedly: Zerbino and Dolce die in a wolf attack, Joli-Coeur succumbs to pneumonia, and Vitalis perishes saving Remi from the exploitative Garofoli, freezing in a snowstorm.

Orphaned again, Remi finds refuge with the Acquin family, gardeners who embrace him as their own. He forges a deep connection with their mute daughter, Lise, teaching her to read and communicate through music. A devastating hailstorm ruins the family business, leading to Pierre Acquin's imprisonment for debt and the scattering of the children. Deemed an outsider by relatives, Remi departs with Capi, vowing to reunite the family.

His path crosses Mattia, a streetwise orphan escaping Garofoli's abuse. They become inseparable partners, earning their keep through musical performances—Remi on harp, Mattia on violin. Their friendship fuels Remi's quest to buy his foster mother a cow and find his birth family. Perilous trials test them, including a near-fatal flooding in a coal mine, strengthening their resolve and camaraderie.

Clues from his infancy belongings lead Remi to discover Mrs. Milligan as his biological mother and Arthur Milligan as his brother. This reunion is delayed by Vitalis's earlier refusal to let Remi stay with them. The full truth emerges after Remi is kidnapped by the criminal Driscoll family—relatives scheming to usurp the Milligan inheritance—and falsely imprisoned. Rescued by Mattia and the sailor Bob, Remi returns to France where Mrs. Milligan formally acknowledges him.

As an adult, Remi becomes a lawyer, marries Lise (who regains her speech), and sees Mattia adopted as his brother by the Milligans. Arthur overcomes his physical disability, embodying the restoration central to Remi's journey. While the original novel concludes with Remi finding familial security, the 1977 anime adaptation depicts him returning to a nomadic life.
