Marc François was a prolific French voice actor and director known for his extensive contributions to the French-language adaptations of numerous Japanese anime series from the 1980s and 1990s. He was born on February 19, 1951. His career was marked by a vast range of voice roles, often taking on multiple characters within a single series, as well as significant behind-the-scenes work as an Adaptation Director (ADR Director) on many major titles.
François's voice became familiar to French audiences through his roles in many of the most popular anime of the era. He had a particularly prominent role in the French adaptation of Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac), where he voiced multiple key characters, including Hyoga of Cygnus, Shiryu of the Dragon, Jabu, and Milo. He also provided voices for several movies in the Saint Seiya franchise. Another major role was as Captain Goto in the Patlabor series, both the television series and the subsequent OVAs. He was also the narrator for the French version of Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers.
In addition to these prominent roles, François voiced characters in a wide array of other series. This included the role of Brutus in Moero Arthur: Hakuba no Oji (listed as both Entaku no Kishi Monogatari: Moero Arthur and Moero Arthur: Hakuba no Oji). He voiced Chamo in New Maple Town Stories and the Stationmaster Monkey in the original Maple Town Stories. He took on the role of Kaos in both Battle Arena Toshinden and Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers, a character he also voiced alongside Obscuror, Badamon, and Rock in the latter series. His other notable roles include characters in Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, and the films Ninja Scroll and Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise.
Beyond acting, Marc François was a highly influential figure in the French anime localization industry as an ADR Director. He directed the French adaptations for a significant number of series, including Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers, both Maple Town Stories and its sequel New Maple Town Stories, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, both Patlabor television series, Saint Seiya, and Queen Millennia. This dual role as both a director and a voice actor placed him at the heart of bringing these animated stories to a French-speaking audience.
Marc François passed away on August 11, 2009. His legacy is defined by the immense body of work he left behind, his voice having defined beloved characters for a generation of French anime viewers and his directorial efforts having shaped the presentation of countless classic series.
